Elemental Theatre Collective Announces 4th of July Late-Night Spectacular, Recession! (The Musical)

Elemental Theatre Collective is prepared to address the economic crisis in the only manner it can possibly be adequately dealt with: the late-night musical sci-fi radio play. Recession (The Musical) offers theatergoers the chance to finally see what happens when free market capitalism, time machines, and catchy tunes are allowed to run amok. Presented in Elemental’s patented old-timey radio style, and featuring a cast of Rhode Island’s funniest theatrical misfits, Recession (The Musical) promises to make this Independence Day weekend one of the funniest since Paul Revere was caught showing Betsy Ross exactly what he meant by “two if by sea”.

The play, written by Elemental artists Dave Rabinow (deca*go*go, Zombie President) and Peter Sampieri (director, deca*go*go, King Stag), follows the adventures of uber-economist Alan Greenspan and his youthful ward Sherman as they board a time machine and race through American history, attempting to forestall the current economic meltdown. On their travels, they encounter luminaries such as Bill Clinton, Ayn Rand, and a young Billy Gates. Could one of them be the mysterious evil genius behind the econo-lypse? Or is something even more sinister afoot? Music and mayhem, love stories and live sound effects, thrills, chills, and the devaluation of everything except a cheap laugh, all coming to an (air-conditioned!) theatre near you this July 4th weekend! Let Elemental supply your fireworks this Independence Day!

Recession (The Musical) will be presented for two nights only: Friday, July 3 and Saturday July 4, 2009. All shows at 11:00 pm at Perishable Theatre, 95 Empire Street, Providence, RI. Tickets are $10 each. Information and reservations available at elementaltheatre.org or (401) 447-3001.
